Yoshihiko Fujii

Yoshihiko Fujii, based in Kainan City, Wakayama Prefecture, is dedicated to continually exploring new possibilities in the traditional Japanese craft of 'Nuri (Lacquering)'. Rooted in classic Kuroe lacquering methods, he developed the urushi glass technique: applying lacquer beautifully and durably to delicate glass. These exceptional pieces—adorned with maki-e and gold leaf—are designed for everyday use and are even dishwasher-safe, representing a new possibility in daily lacquerware.

Kishu Kuroe

Kishu Kuroe, Kainan-shi in Wakayama is the center of the Kuroe-style lacquerwork production for more than 400 years and is counted as one of the Japan's three biggest production centers with Yamanaka URUSHI (Lacquer) and Aizu URUSHI. Because it was suitable for lacquerware production with the humidity that was suitable for lacquered hardening from a warm climate to face the sea, lacquerware industry prospered. The house and the workplace of old lacquerware craftsmen, and the wholesale dealers form a line like the tooth of the saw facing the street around Kawabata Street with regularity, and the scenery of the unique lacquerware town is formed.

Kuroe Lacquerware

Kuroe lacquerware, also known as Kishu lacquerware, is characterized by its durability, simplicity, and practical design. It features a distinctive technique where a red lacquer surface wears away over time, revealing a black undercoat, creating a unique, elegant pattern. This traditional craft, rooted in the Edo period, continues to be cherished for everyday use and timeless beauty. Its strength and natural elegance grow with use, making it a valued cultural heritage.

GLASS URUSHI

GLASS URUSHI (Lacquer) which was born by a traditional technique of Kuroe and new idea. The lacquering was unsuitable for the field of Western style dishes which often use fork and knife that was easy to be scratched on the surface so far. GLASS URUSHI changed an image of the conventional lacquerware by fusing rich expression of Lacquer into the transparency of the glass.

Philosophy

Fujii is unswayed by the constraints of the industry, sticking to his own beliefs and valuing a free and self-responsible attitude. He pursues unique technological innovation without relying on traditional craftsmanship, and this lifestyle is reflected in his work.

In creating his works, he places emphasis on unique, original techniques and practicality. In particular, he creates new value by embodying his sensibilities, such as the technique of applying lacquer to the back of glass, dishwasher-safe lacquerware and maki-e. He arrived at his current style after many years of trial and error.
