Drawing from the heritage of Kyoto’s master flag-makers, the MAKU. apron by kiten.kyoto is more than a garment—it is a piece of wearable architecture designed for the rhythm of daily life. Inspired by the shibori or gathering of traditional Japanese temple curtains, it features a unique, flowing silhouette that pays homage to the noren and banners that have defined Kyoto’s visual landscape for centuries. Developed by Kato Ken Flag Shop, an atelier with over 70 years of history, this piece bridges the gap between ancient craftsmanship and modern utility.
Each apron is hand-dyed using the traditional hikizome brush-dyeing method. This painstaking process involves stretching the fabric taut and pulling the dye across with a brush, ensuring the pigment penetrates deep into the fibers. Because it is dyed from both sides, the colors remain vivid and rich. On the reverse hem, you will find the uramasari detail—deliberate brush marks known as kasuri that celebrate the hand of the artisan, a playful nod to the Japanese aesthetic of finding hidden beauty on the inside.
The foundation of the apron is 100% Juban Tenjiku cotton, a material traditionally used for happi coats and temple curtains. It offers a rare balance: thick and sturdy enough to withstand years of friction, yet light and flexible enough to move with the body. It is built to evolve, gaining character and a soft vintage patina with every wash. Functional elegance is woven into the design through side drawstrings that allow you to gather the hem, transforming the shape from a sleek drape to a tucked look, while deep slits ensure unrestricted movement for gardening, cooking, or art.
Beyond its silhouette, the MAKU. is designed as a tool for the modern creator. The clever pocket placement allows the fabric to be used as a makeshift mitt for handling warm plates, and the entire apron folds neatly into an integrated back pocket for compact storage. Available in four timeless shades— classic indigo (Ai), luminous yellow (Kihada), earthy cypress brown (Hiwada), and refined tin grey (Suzu)—it serves as a starting point for any creative endeavor, inviting you to treat daily tasks as a craft.
